Temperature and Distance?
Wednesday, April 4th, 2007I grew up outside Chicago. It gets seriously cold there. I was brave and tough. Then I moved out here to Washington, DC to do my Ph.D. and discovered that somehow biologically, I’m a southerner. I have lost all taste for the cold. When it’s warm outside (or hot for that matter), I am smiling and happy. I did all my marathon long runs in 95 degree weather with 100% humidity. It was beautiful. When it’s cold outside, I am crabby and the last thing I want to do it put on a little pair of shorts and run around. It’s remarkable how strongly the weather affects my moods.
Today, I was looking at my Nike running log, which has some cool graphing features. I created this graph which makes the weather point more clearly than I ever could. Here is a chart of distance and average temperature for the last 12 months. You don’t need much statistical training to see that when it’s cold, I run less.
